Playworker Position

We provide a holistic Occupational Therapy based service for children and young people 0-25 providing specialist interventions for both mainstream children or those children with special educational needs and disabilities. We are looking to expand the team and we are excited to provide you with an opportunity to join our team as a playworker and are committed to giving you all the training you need to fulfil the role.

Our ideal playworker:

The role of a playworker is to provide a safe, stimulating environment for children and young people with learning disability, or autism, or both, and to ensure that activities at holiday clubs, meet their needs. A playworker focuses on supporting one particular child, or a small group of children, each day and helps them take part in organised activities, as well as encouraging them to join in with others.

We’re looking for people with experience of or a desire to develop skills working with 5-18 year olds in a play environment. Good team players, playworkers are also able to use their initiative and work independently. You’ll need an understanding of the principles of play and the role of the adult, and an awareness of the Children’s Act 1989. We will support you with Training and Development opportunities. 

Responsibilities and Duties of a playworker

  • Plan and prepare suitable leisure activities for children and young people
  • Deliver stimulating activities for children and young people 4-18 with additional needs
  • Work 1:1 with a child or young person
  • Lead small group sessions
  • Support children and young people over lunchtimes – at times this means support with cutting food or feeding
  • Help children and young people with using the toilet – some of our children have toileting needs.
  • Support children and young people in managing their behaviour
  • Completing session records
  • Undertake any other duties consistent with the objectives of the post, as required.

Where you will be working  

Location: Thorney Road, Eye, Peterborough, PE6 7UN  

You will be working at Breakthrough Therapy Solutions, which is a small independent therapy service with good facilities, covering the Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire areas. Working within a multidisciplinary team, you will provide leisure activities and support for children and young people 0-25 with SEND and their families. At times our clients may be experiencing mental health difficulties or behaviours that challenge. We offer holiday clubs for children with SEND based in Peterborough. Running during Easter, Summer, May, October, and February school holidays, they provide respite for parents and carers, and offer a setting where children can enjoy fun activities. 

Our teenage workshops provide opportunities for teenagers to engage in interesting age-appropriate activities.  

Holiday clubs run Monday to Friday during the school holidays, 9am-5pm and some hours during term time in after school groups and Saturday clubs. The hours of work as a playworker are to be agreed in advance.

Breakthrough Therapy Solutions is committed to Safeguarding and protecting the young people and service users within our service. You’ll need to undertake some e-learning and face-to-face training, including safeguarding training. All candidates will be subject to an enhanced DBS check and reference checks. Playworker hours are School Holiday hours only with potential of Saturday work- £9 to £15 per hour.
